JONATHAN FORBES

I began coaching as a Ski and Snowboard Instructor in 2013. While working at Ski Easy in 2019, I met Julia, the owner of MyLittleBoarders, who offered me a skateboard coaching opportunity. This eventually led to the creation of North London Skate Club.

I strive to create a strong community and prioritise guest experience, inspired by the atmosphere at The Snow Centre. The club’s success is rooted in this sense of community and I focus on teaching fundamentals through fun and games, even for adults.

As Mr. Miyagi famously said, “First Learn Stand, Then Learn Fly.”

SANTIAGO LOPEZ

Hey, I’m Santiago! I love teaching skateboarding—it’s incredibly fulfilling and allows me to connect with my students.

I began coaching at North London Skate Club as a trainee in 2020, when I was 16. I’m really grateful that the Club offers young skaters like me, Izzi, and Noah the chance to get involved. It’s really helped me develop self confidence and I can see the younger ones growing in the same way too. Our Club fosters a sense of belonging, ensuring both coaches and students feel like they’re part of something special.

I’ve been told by my students that I am kind and patient. I always try to adapt to the way they learn as everyone is different, and I want them to have the best learning experience possible.

MILO JACKSON

I’m Milo. I skateboard because it makes me happy and can be so rewarding to see progression in the kids we teach, when learning new tricks.

Seeing a student smile when they conquer a new manoeuvre is pure magic.

I like to take students around different parts of a skatepark, the ramps, flatground or even outside the park just to cruise around to discover what aspect of skating they enjoy most, so we can focus on that.

Skateboarding can be painful, but fear not! With experience, you’ll learn techniques for falling gracefully, such as sliding or rolling, making the process more manageable.

ALEX GRIFFITHS

I’ve been coaching for five awesome years and love witnessing the progress of my students. Beginners start with basics, and I adapt based on their interests—cool tricks or flowing around the park. Variety is key to keep things interesting.

As a high-level coach, I specialise in transition skills, which is my primary skating focus. I prepare people for competitions, guiding them to give their all.

Skateboarding makes me feel like I’m flying and pushing my limits, despite occasional pain. But you know what? The exhilaration of getting up and nailing a new trick outweighs the pain without a doubt!

SOPHIE FLETCHER

Hi I’m Sophie and I like to get super creative with skateboarding and l love to watch skate club members develop their own style and learn to have fun on their boards.

I’ve been coaching since May 2023 and my favorite part about coaching is seeing pupils develop their own style as they become more confident on their boards. It’s important to make sure every pupil gets the chance to focus on what they want to learn so in an ideal lesson everyone will get to work on what they want whilst taking inspiration from their peers, skateboarding is about all about freedom and I want my lessons to mirror that.

I love the feel of pool coping, especially with the tiles underneath so Crystal Palace pool is my favourite London skatepark. And of course my favorite skateboarder is Shenae Collins- her style is fast, aggressive and characterised by long grinds and no-comply tail slides.

NOAH SMEATON

Hi I’m Noah and I’m 14 years old and I’m a sponsored skateboarder.

One day when I was 8 yrs old, I was walking along next to the skate park and I was like WOW! that’s awesome. So the very next day I went to the skate park with my Toys “R” Us board. The moment I stood on the shabby piece of wood I knew it was for me. I skateboard because it is something I love and helps me escape and makes me feel free and happy.

I have been coaching for a few months now and love the experience of being able to help people. I love watching kids get better and better, it reminds me of how I was taught by local skaters in the community. I like pupils to find their own style and to progress by finding what comes naturally…skateboarding is about self expression.

MY SKATEBOARDING LIFE

  • Stance: Goofy.
  • Set-up: Clown skateboard…they’re such a sick company and give a lot of help to skate communities. Indy Hollows and my bearings are Bronson Speed Co raws there such sick bearings.
  • Favourite trick: At the mo I’m really loving double flips.
  • Favourite skater: I don’t really have one. I feel like it’s hard to have a favourite skater because all of them are unique in different ways.
  • Fav skate park: Montrose in Edgware…the community is lovely and close and it’s a great park.

CHRISTIAN PARRIS

I’m new to coaching but have assisted skaters for years. Coaching reflects the essence of skating…seeing others improve and nail tricks.

I skated vert ramps for a decade before rediscovering my love for skating in 2020 when my daughter wanted to learn. Now, I prioritise riding and connecting with fellow skaters over constant trick learning.

Skating allows for selective learning without compromising the overall experience. In group coaching, I suggest and break down steps based on individual interests. I mix things up for skaters in different areas (bowl, street, cruising) to cater to their preferences.

Falling is part of skateboarding and can hurt, but it teaches valuable lessons. The joy of skateboarding outweighs the bruises and ego blows. Knowing how to fall safely minimises injuries, like Alex G’s rolling technique.

MY SKATEBOARDING LIFE

  • Private lesson speciality: Teaching high performance half pipe and bowl.
  • Stance: Goofy.
  • Set-up: Board: Powell Peralta Steve Caballero, Trucks Indy’s 159, Bearings Bones Reds, wheels, Spitfire 54mm 99A hardness, Rails Santa cruz. As I am old school I go with old school boards and are influenced by the rider.
  • Favourite trick: My fav tricks are backside/frontside 5-0’s, boardslides, Smith grinds and alley oop 50-50/5-0’s. I’m also fond of the frontside bone air but haven’t done one in a long time.
  • Favourite skater: I’m very much an old school skateboarder, so my favourite skaters are Steve Caballero/Chris Miller and Christian Hosoi.
  • Fav skate park: My favourite skatepark is Bay66 in West London, I’m a transition skater and they have an amazing mini ramp and great bowl there.

IZZY CAMBELL

Hi my name is Izzi and I’m a 16 years old competitive skater (in-between studying for my GCSEs and coaching :-)). I started coaching for North London Skate Club in 2022 and I love it. There’s nothing quite like helping someone land a trick that they’ve been struggling with…you get to share in their excitement. If the pupil is new to skateboarding, I try to slowly introduce them to different aspects of skating, and see what they like doing. I find they’re more engaged and enjoy the lessons a lot more.

I love everything about skateboarding which can be anything from competitions to hanging out with my friends. Skateboarding teaches you a lot, sometimes it hurts, but you learn to assess the dangers and get better at knowing when to bail.

MY SKATEBOARDING LIFE

  • Stance: Goofy.
  • Set-up: Anti-hero deck, Independent trucks, Spitfire Wheels and Prescription Hardware bearings.
  • Favourite trick: Frontside Airs
  • Favourite skater: Mark Gonzales.

I love helping students learn tricks that will develop their street skating abilities, particularly flip tricks and nollie bigspins.

My favourite skate parks would have to be Dean Lane in Bristol and Stockwell in London and my all time favourite skater is Nelly Morville from Limosine!
